With Doctor Strange available on home entertainment formats this month, we caught up with one of the film’s stars, Benedict Wong to discuss his character, Wong, mentor to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange.

The British-born actor spoke about what might be in store for the Master of the Mystic Arts down the road in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and why he’d love to see Wong meet Spider-man.

“I do have memories of telling my cousins that I was Spider-Man for a while,” he says. “It would be great to involve Wong and Spiderman in further films if anything ever arises.”

A Wong Return?

It might well arise. With unconfirmed rumours of a Doctor Strange 2 and talk of him appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s definitely a possibility.

“There’s a potential that I may or may not be in a couple. Who knows? I might be,” says Benedict when questioned about his ongoing involvement in the films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A key action scene involving Wong was cut from the final version of Doctor Strange, and it could be an indicator that there’s absolutely more to see from Wong in future Marvel films, whether that might be a Doctor Strange sequel, or indeed Avengers: Infinity War.

“I waved my Wand of Watoomb around and there was some serious action going on,” says Wong of the missing scene. “It didn’t make the cut but it will be forever in my mind and the ones that were there to see that.”

The Kamar-Taj Relics

While Benedict isn’t able to confirm how or whether Wong might figure in the MCU going forward, he does speculate that Wong might get more involved in the action. He suggests we could get to see the breadth of his abilities as he brandishes a bunch of mystical weapons.

He says, “If they do decide to bring him forward, well, I think there are a lot of relics in the Kamar-Taj – I’m sure you saw all these weapons in this movie – and I’m sure if Wong took a huge sack of relics and brought them with him, he would know how to use them.”

So, how would Wong handle other Marvel characters he has the potential to come into contact with? Watch the video above and find out how he’d deal with Groot should the two ever meet…

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange is out in the UK on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and DVD from March 6 and is available on digital download from February 24. In the US, you can own it on physical formats from February 28, and get it now on digital download.
