Today, Lionsgate brings us the very first trailer for their film based on the tragic events that caused the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, appropriately titled Deepwater Horizon. The film is directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Friday Night Lights) and stars Mark Wahlberg as Mike Williams, who was the chief electronics technician on the oil rig when it suffered a catastrophic explosion. Check out the trailer below.

That’s some pretty intense stuff right there, and it all appears to be anchored by a great cast. Wahlberg, Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, John Malkovich, and Dylan O’Brien lent their talents to the film, and I think that speaks to the quality of the material. The film was written in part by J.C. Chandor, who wrote and directed the stunning All is Lost, a survival story at sea that really caught critics by surprise.

Mike Williams’ harrowing story of survival will be the film’s primary focus, and the trailer cleverly keeps the action very focused, intercutting it with a great layman’s explanation of the oil drilling process. Dylan O’Brien, the recently injured star of the Maze Runner films, plays Caleb Holloway, who was a floorhand on the Deepwater Horizon rig when the blowout occurred.

Lionsgate has also released the first poster for the film, which originally debuted at The Huffington Post.
