It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since the release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, the classic real-time strategy game based on the popular tabletop strategy franchise. Developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega, Dawn of War III doesn’t have a release date quite yet, but today they released an announcement trailer featuring CGI Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar duking it out on the battlefield.

In an official announcement today, Sega mentioned that the game will feature the enormous battles fans have come to expect from the series, as well as an in-depth customization system to keep players occupied for a long time. While the trailer features no in-game footage, Relic’s Stephen MacDonald, the game’s Executive Producer, has this to say: “Our biggest units ever? Check. Giant orbital lasers? Check. Base-building, epic heroes, huge battles, it’s all in there.”

No one really expected this announcement, especially given the amount of time it’s been since the last game came out. While there have been a few whispers here and there about a successor, especially after Sega acquired Relic Entertainment and the Warhammer license for $26.6 million after the closure of THQ, some assumed the next game would be the first entry in a new Warhammer 40,000 series, not a new Dawn of War game.
