The second season of the mega hit Attack on Titan has just begun, and fans can’t wait to see what the new season has in store for Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps. It’s been almost four years since fans saw the epic battles between humans and titans and it’s understandable that you’ve might have forgotten a few thing. So, to help you catch up, here’s your crash course on Attack on Titan, detailing the key major events from the first season.
Shingeki no Kyojin also known as Attack on Titan is a 2013 anime series based on the manga of the same name by Hajime Isayama. The story is set in a world loosely based 19th-century European world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by massive walls. More specifically, they are forced to live behind these walls due to Titans, larger-than-life humanoid creatures who devour people without apparent reason.
And while you might think that the monsters in Attack on Titan are your typical giants they are absolutely not. For one thing, they do not seem that bright, as they walk around the outskirts of the city without any purpose other than eating and regurgitating people. And although they are primitive and mindless creatures, their unpredictability and brute strength make them hard to kill. And to make things even worse the only way to take them down is with a unique blade targeted at the nape of the titan’s neck. If not they would regenerate and eat you to bits.
The Fall of Wall Maria
Humanity has been dealing with this mysterious race of humanoid giants for over 100 years. Consequently, human civilization has been pushed to the point of near-extinction. For the human race to survive, they’ve retreated behind high walls, built after the appearance of the first Titans. For almost a century, the last colony of humanity has lived in a secluded corner of the world. Protected from the Titans by three large walls, Maria, Rose and Sheena. In Wall Maria, in the Shiganshina District we meet Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Things take a takes a dark turn for the trio of protagonists when a never before seen type of Titan – Colossal Titan – appears and with one fell swoop tears down Wall Maria. As a result, a horde of Titans swarm into the city, eating everyone on site. And, unfortunately, one of those people is Eren’s mother who’s eaten right in front of him.
To seek revenge on the Titans. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin join the Survey Corps. They’re an elite squad who has spent decades perfecting and learning to use an elaborate system of pulleys, a.k.a. the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear. Which allows them to fling themselves through roof- and treetops. And of course, strike the Titans down.
The Transformation of Eren Yeager
And while Eren is one of the main heroes – and has the most anger towards the Titans – it turns out that Eren can shift into one. Though the Survey Squad is wary of him at first, they use him as their secret weapon. Granting that the Titans have shown to be mindless creatures, they seem to be evolving. As several different Titans have started to pop up outside the city. Especially, the sudden appearance of a Female Titan who can withstand the squad’s attacks and is intelligent enough to kill even the most experienced team member. Though this new Titan has demonstrated her superior abilities, it is soon revealed that Annie, a member of the Military Police Brigade is the Female Titan. Thus, having the same shifting abilities as Eren.
To capture the Titan mole, Erwin and Armin make an elaborate plan to capture Annie. But their plan fails miserably. What ensues is an epic battle between Titan Eren and Titan Annie, leaving a pile of destruction and death in their path. When it appears that Eren is about to eat Titan Annie, he stops, leaving her the opportunity to encase herself in a crystal.
The Waiting Game
At a government hearing, Eren vows to find more humans that can turn into Titans and use them to launch a counterattack against the Titans. That was basically the end of the first season, except for the ending credits of the season finale. We see a piece of the wall starts to crumble revealing a Titan within the wall. Leaving a massive four-year cliffhanger behind, that fans will finally see that story continue and that teaser explained. Who knows what other surprises the second season of Attack on Titan has in store?
