Is Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency largely nonsense, or is it an intricately plotted masterpiece? Possibly a bit of both. The Max Landis-created series, based on Douglas Adams’s books, is known for its zany antics and quirky dialogue, and much to the delight of fans, it’s due back on screens for a second season on October 14.

What we’ve seen so far in the form of teasers and trailers doesn’t give a whole lot away. And if it’s anything like as crazy as the plot of Season 1, it’s going to be difficult to figure out exactly how things will pan out. That’s why a dream sequence in the season premiere had us particularly intrigued.

Also released as a teaser earlier this year, the clip shows the titular Dirk, played by Samuel Barnett, experiencing a dream in which Elijah Wood’s Todd Brotzman and Jade Eshete’s Farah Black rescue him from the Blackwing prison where he’s being held. In the dream, they make reference to a whole load of things that we just had to ask them about – including Thor.

FANDOM chatted to stars Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood at New York Comic Con, who both initially said the scene had no bearing on anything, but they quickly changed their tune.

“That’s the funny thing, sometimes things are put in the show and they seem utterly random and it pays off in Season 3 or 4,” said Barnett.

Elijah Wood agreed that it’s difficult to tell: “There are things that we find out later that we thought were utterly insignificant that become significant later.”

But at the mention of sacred algae, which Todd mentions during the dream sequence, the duo became animated – because of its connection with Thor. Thor is a character within the Douglas Adams books.

“The sacred algae, that’s also another reference to Thor, it’s the second reference to Thor,” said Wood. “So that’s very specific and could end up becoming a thing.”

Barnett added, “I hope we get to meet Thor at some point.”

We hope so too.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency returns to screens for Season 2 on October 14.
