As the Fast & Furious franchise has progressed, it’s made a habit of featuring some pretty enjoyable villains. Most recently, Jason Statham was seen giving it his best bad guy try in Furious 7. Seeing as how the series is scheduled to go up to ten installments, it makes sense that a headlining baddie can bring a lot to the table. If today’s news pans out, it sounds like Fast 8 is going to meet that criteria and possibly exceed it.

Charlize Theron is reportedly in talks to join Fast 8 as the central antagonist. Considering she just blew the world away in another automobile-focused action film, it makes total sense that Universal would pursue her for this. It doesn’t hurt that Theron was easily the standout performance in Snow White and the Huntsman, and looks to be bringing that same delightful archness to the sequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

Theron has always been an actress who can command anything she puts her mind to. The fact that she can star in such stuff as Monster and then be thoroughly silly in appearances on Funny or Die shows the unbelievable range she has. Theron knows how to have fun but also not stab herself in the foot. Fast 8 seems like a perfect opportunity to show off her strengths. Plus, this will be the first time that the lead villain in this franchise is a woman. That alone is pretty awesome.

Here’s hoping she takes the role. The Fast & Furious films are juggernauts at the box office and anything that keeps Theron in the spotlight is a good thing. She’s easily one of the most talented and multi-faceted actresses working today, and it would be a blast to see her butt heads with Dom and the gang.
