Every superhero has an origin.

For the first time, Captain Underpants is coming to the small screen. The beloved children’s book character appears in the upcoming streaming series, DreamWorks The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants.

Captain Underpants was created by Dav Pilkey, who is excited to see his character on Netflix (a big-screen adaptation, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, came out in 2017).

“Kids have been asking for more Captain Underpants books for years, and to me it feels like we are getting brand-new books – except they’re animated!” Pilkey said. “I hope everybody will love the show as much as I do.”

The story, for those of you who need a refresh, hasn’t changed.

Schoolmates and best friends George Beard and Harold Hutchins share a love of comic books and a dislike of their angry,fun-hating principal Mr. Krupp.

Mr. Krupp is a big meanie.

When their over-the-top-pranks get out of hand, the four graders unleash their creative superpowers by transforming Krupp into the bumbling, briefs-baring Captain Underpants.

Captain Underpants may not be the brightest, but he has superhuman strength, durability, and the ability to fly. He’ll battle toilet paper mummies and big-bottomed gym teachers on the show. His weakness? Water, which causes him to revert back to his human form.

“It’s about friendship and it’s about school, but for me, really, the core of it is about creativity,” says executive producer Peter Hastings, who worked on Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Animaniacs.

The animation style for The Epic Tales differs from other Dreamworks series like Trollhunters and Dragons: Race to the Edge. The 2-D animated series will incorporate everything from sock puppets to flip-o-ramas to claymation.

If the narrator sounds familiar, it’s none other than Sean Astin. The actor is no stranger to adventure, having played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The cast also includes Nat Faxon as Captain Underpants/Mr. Krupp, Jay Gragnani as George, and Ramone Hamilton as Harold. Other voice cast includes David Koechner, Tress MacNeille, Laraine Newman, Stephen Root, Jorge Diaz, Mindy Sterling, Erica Lutrell, Dayci Brookshire, and Evan Kishiyama.

All 13 half-hour episodes premiere exclusively on Netflix on July 13, 2018.
