Update: It’s official, Captain Marvel does not make an appearance in Infinity War. But there is definitely a moment that sets up the character’s highly anticipated introduction into the MCU.

In the post-credits scene, Nick Fury is seen desperately paging someone for help. But like so many of our heroes, he begins to disappear into the ether after Thanos’ deadly snap of his fingers.

The pager drops to the ground and we see an image of the screen with a “Sending…” message. Suddenly, Captain Marvel’s superhero symbol appears on the pager. Fury was in the midst of sending her an S.O.S., suggesting that she may hold the key to stopping Thanos’ reign of terror.

Original Story:

Fans are eager to see Captain Marvel a.k.a. Carol Danvers make her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Avengers: Infinity War promising to unite a huge number of superheroes, is it possible that we could see the interstellar hero make her first appearance in the giant superhero showdown?

Fans Have a Theory

The biggest piece of footage that has fanned some fan theory fires was the Super Bowl TV spot for Avengers: Infinity War. You can watch the spot in the embed above. Around the 11-second mark, there is a shot where Captain America, Black Widow, and Vision walk through what looks like the headquarters for the Avengers. However, there appears to be someone standing behind Cap, and they seem to be wearing a suit that has similar colors to the classic Captain Marvel outfit.

Plus, it’s been confirmed that the film Captain Marvel won’t be taking place in the present. It will be a period piece set during the ’90s. So, it definitely opens up the possibility that Captain Marvel showing up during the time that Avengers: Infinity War occurs.

But, it sounds like these theories might already be proven wrong.

What We Know

Here’s what we know: there will be a climactic battle in Avengers: Infinity War that will feature over 40 Marvel characters. During a set visit, ComicBook.com verified that Captain Marvel does not show up in this battle. If she was going to be inserted into the film, it’s almost certain she’d be utilized during the giant brawl with Thanos.

Additionally, with so many characters getting thrown into the fray, it’s unlikely that Marvel would introduce a new potential flagship hero — she’s got the company’s name in her title, so they are going to do everything they can to start her off right — and risk her being lost in the shuffle of everything else going on in Avengers: Infinity War.

But…

With all that said, there is still the possibility that Carol Danvers will show up in one of the MCU’s famous post-credits stingers. And it may not even have been filmed yet. When The Avengers had their world premiere, the cast got together and shot the famous shawarma scene which was inserted into the movie for its release. Could a similar stunt be pulled with Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War?

Possibly! Captain Marvel is currently in production and Marvel loves to take advantage of their consistent shooting schedules to insert little teases into future movies. For example, when Thor: The Dark World was wrapping up post-production, James Gunn was filming Guardians of the Galaxy. They used this opportunity to have Gunn shoot a scene with Benicio del Toro’s mysterious character, the Collector. That short bit was placed at the end of Thor: The Dark World. The same thing happened with Doctor Strange; Taika Waititi was shooting Thor: Ragnarok and was able to shoot a scene between Stephan Strange and Thor that bridged the two films.

It’s likely that we’ll get some sort of tease that will lead into Ant-Man and the Wasp since that’s the next MCU film slated to release after Avengers: Infinity War. But, don’t be surprised if the film sneaks in a very quick glimpse at Captain Marvel.

We’ll know for sure when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27.
