Better Call Saul made a triumphant appearance at Comic-Con today, with executive producer Vince Gilligan teasing, “The overlap between Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad gets closer and closer!”

Stars Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, and Giancarlo Esposito appeared alongside Gilligan and showrunner Peter Gould to discuss the forthcoming fourth season. They also premiered a new trailer, which can be viewed below …

Connecting the Dots

Season 4 of Better Call Saul — which Gilligan promises will be the best yet — shares connective tissue with its predecessor Breaking Bad. Several scenes are set during the Breaking Bad era. It will also feature the likes of Lydia Rodarte-Quayle (Laura Fraser) and “The Cousins,” Leonel and Marco Salamanca (Luis and Daniel Moncada). A character called Lalo — referenced in Season 2 of Breaking Bad — will also make an appearance, and be played by Tony Dalton (Sens8).

The return of Gus Fring is the biggest news, however, and Esposito, who plays the big bad, claimed, “Not only is this character one you’ve never seen before … but it’ll remind you to look more closely at your neighbours!” Acknowledging the love for the show in the room, the actor added, “Great writing inspires actors. And great fans inspire great shows.”

But What About Saul?

Rhea Seehorn and Bob Odenkirk in Season 4 of 'Better Call Saul'.

But what of the title character? The season will revolve around Jimmy McGill coming to terms with the suicide of his brother Chuck. While he will continue his slide into a life of crime, star Odenkirk upset the audience by claiming his character’s alter-ego “Saul Goodman is a bad guy.” Then, he apologised for stating that fact.

Gilligan added, “It is a tragedy that he’s going to turn into that guy. Who would you rather have a beer with? Jimmy McGill or Saul Goodman?”

Better Call Saul returns to AMC on Monday, Aug. 6.
