No matter the story, no matter the universe – one of the most fascinating things about reinterpreting a classic character like Spider-Man is seeing new costumes and styles that fit a specific story or reality. With Into the Spider-Verse, we’re getting a whole host of Spider-Men/Women/Animals with their own unique costumes. Whether it’s the cartoon nature of Spider-Ham or the brooding bleakness of Spider-Noir, there are some beautiful costumes throughout the film. Let’s take a walk through the Spider-Wardrobe.

Spider-Man

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. We see a couple of different iterations of the classic red and blue look that’s iconic with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. Whether it’s the perfect, career-hero version of Spidey leaping from buildings with grace, or the chubbier Peter who’s struggling with the weight of his responsibilities – the costume still looks great. The reactionary lenses that give us his expressions work a treat. Spider-Man has never looked this good in animation before.

Weirdly, even the sweatpants-Spider suit works well for the older, graying Peter Parker. Sure, it’s not as slick as the refined suit, but it adds to his messy charm. What’s great to see is the attention to detail from the animators. The older Pete’s web-shooters are faded and the red paint has begun to disappear, showing the gray metal underneath. It’s clear that the 140-strong animation team really didn’t miss out on a single detail to portray these characters perfectly.

Miles’ Black Suit

When Miles Morales finally donned his own suit in the comics, he’d already worn a red and blue costume but was told it was in poor taste after Peter’s death. But the red and blue suit he buys during Into the Spider-Verse acts like his training gear before he’s ready to become a fully fledged Spider-Man. Plus, he doesn’t exactly look the part with an ill fitting costume alongside eye and nose holes in the mask… Sorry, Miles.

Luckily, his black suit is a near perfect adaption of his comic suit, but with its own unique spin on things. It takes inspiration from Miles’ graffiti hobby, as you can probably tell from the sprayed circular Spider-symbol on his chest. To once again praise the animation team, the detail here is so intricate that we can see the spray marks on the suit where Miles has decided to leave the original suit’s coloring. Plus, those red outlines on the lenses look fantastic!

Spider-Cave

When the trailer for the film debuted, everyone pored over the clips showing off a wall of cases housing a variety of different suits. There’s the Electro-Proof suit, which Peter created so that he could fight Electro safely without constantly being zapped. Further along in the case was a black and gold suit, also known as the Bullet-Proof suit. That one just makes complete sense, knowing the type of people Pete comes across in his line of work.

And in this universe, there’s a small nod to another iconic hero in the form of the Iron-Spider suit, made for Peter by Tony Stark. Also on show in the reflection of the glass was the white emblem costume from the Marvel’s Spider-Man game, A.K.A. the Advanced Suit. It’s like a treasure trove of easter eggs in that Spider-Cave. There’s even a caped version of the red and blue suit that looks suspiciously like Doctor Strange’s cloak of levitation. An honourable shout-out has to be made for the Big-Time suit, complete with green stripes, alongside the classic Secret Wars black suit.

Spider-Team

Spider-Verse-Gwen

But most importantly, we have to look at the rest of the Spider-Team. The stand-out Spider here, is undoubtedly Spider-Gwen (or Spider-Woman, as she’s known on Earth-65). Her costume is brilliant, it consists of a white hood torso before a pointed black design covers the lower half. The hood itself has an inner pink webbed design that highlights her white mask. That pink webbing is also on the inner arms of the costume. And did we mention the pink highlights around her lenses? So cool.

spider-verse-noir

Then there’s Spider-Noir, coming from a world where the Spider-Man story takes place in 1933 during the Great Depression. He’s dressed in a black trenchcoat, mask and trilby. Since he’s from the Noir universe, he’s completely black and white – with huge bright white goggles that sit over his eyes. He might be the darkest member of the group, but Nicholas Cage brings his A-game to the role.

Another incredible addition to the team is Peni Parker and her SP//dr mech. She comes from Earth-14512, and shares a psychic link with a radioactive spider that helps her pilot the huge robot. She’s brought to life during Into the Spider-Verse with an anime style, and she’s a joy to watch. Finally, we need to address the Spider-Ham in the room. Yes, he was a spider bitten by a radioactive pig. He’s dressed in the usual red and blue suit, except for the fact that his mouth is exposed, and he has a pair of spider-eyes on his snout as well as his face. It’s weird okay? Let’s not get into his ability to pull random weapons seemingly from thin air…

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14.
