La La Land continues its domination of awards season, picking up 11 nominations as Bafta announced its selections this morning. The film features in almost every category it’s eligible for, bar supporting actor, supporting actress and make up & hair.

The romantic ode to Hollywood starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is directed by Damien Chazelle. Chazelle had a taste of awards success in 2015 with Whiplash. The drumming drama picked up three Baftas, three Oscars and a Golden Globe. However, none of the awards was for best film or best direction.

A record-breaking haul for La La Land at Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles included trophies for best musical or comedy film and best direction. In all, it took home seven awards.

On this evidence, Chazelle, who also wrote the film, could find himself with the most decorated movie in history on his hands. We’ll find out what chance it could have of eclipsing other big winners on January 24 when the Oscar nominations are announced.

Amy Adams Arrival Nocturnal Animals
Amy Adams appears in both Arrival and Nocturnal Animals – each film has been honoured with nine Bafta nominations

Other films to receive multiple nominations include Tom Ford’s complex thriller Nocturnal Animals and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve’s pensive sci-fi Arrival. Each film picked up nine nominations, going head-to-head in five categories. Nocturnal Animals converted one of its nominations at Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson nabbing the award for best supporting actor. Arrival went away empty handed.

Manchester By The Sea, Kenneth Lonergan’s drama about grief starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, has also been recognised. It got six nominations. Affleck won the Golden Globe for best actor on Sunday. Ken Loach’s benefits drama I, Daniel Blake scooped five nominations.

Last year’s box office smash Rogue One, meanwhile, hasn’t been entirely overlooked – it’s nominated in the Make Up & Hair and Special Visual Effects categories. Doctor Strange has picked up nominations alongside it. The Marvel hit has also been given the nod for production design.

Eddie Redmayne Fantastic Beasts
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them has picked up four Bafta nominations

Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has also been nominated for production design and special effects, as well as for sound and costume design.

There were some notable names missing from the nominations. Denzel Washington’s acclaimed performance in 1950s-set drama Fences was overlooked, with Barry Jenkins missing out on a nod for best director for Moonlight. The film itself is in the running for best film. Martin Scorsese’s historical drama Silence was also snubbed.

The Bafta rising star nominees were announced last week and include Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor Ruth Negga. This award is voted for by the public. Winners of all categories will be announced at the official Bafta awards ceremony on February 12.
