Since his devastating defeat at the hands of Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma in the grand finals at EVO 2016, Adam “Armada” Lindgren has been quietly dominating in the Super Smash Bros. Melee competitive scene. Armada won Heir 3 last month in England and just this past weekend won the Super Smash Bros. Syndicate 2016 championship in Holland.

While Heir 3 featured a somewhat weak playing field, including only a handful of notable pros such as William “Leffen” Hjelte and Mustafa “Ice” Akcakaya, Armada looked in tip-top shape.

Armada sliced through the Syndicate 2016 competition with ease using his one of his top characters, Peach. In the upper bracket finals, Armada faced Falco player Weston “Westballz” Dennis. After some very close matches with one stock remaining for each side, Armada secured his spot in the grand finals in his clinching set by 4-stocking Westballz after the latter made the switch to Fox.

Seeking revenge, Westballz picked himself up and took down Ice in the lower bracket finals in a clean 3-0 set sweep to set up his rematch vs Armada in the grand finals.

The start of the grand finals match went well for Westballz and he took the first set off Armada. He then decided to make a curious switch to his other main, Captain Falcon, and was severely punished in the next set. Armada then tied the series with 3 stocks remaining. Making the switch back to Falco, Westballz hoped to repeat his first set magic by taking another two games off Armada.

After two closely contested games in which Armada barely escaped with a stock remaining, he was crowned Super Smash Bros. Syndicate 2016 champion. While Westballz has to be disappointed with the result, it was one of the best showings to date for the American. This should hopefully prove to be a confidence boost heading into his next tournament.

As for Armada, perhaps these two smaller tournament wins calmed him down since EVO. Perhaps now he can now focus on taking home first place at his hometown Dreamhack Winter tournament scheduled for the end of November.
