One of the biggest mysteries of the DC Extended Universe‘s Aquaman has been the antagonist. There have been many assumptions based on the casting decisions, but today’s news has solidified who Arthur Curry will be chucking his trident at. If you know Aquaman at all, you won’t be too surprised.

Black-Manta-Villain-Revealed

Black Manta will be causing trouble for Aquaman in James Wan’s adaptation of the classic DC character. Though the casting hasn’t been revealed, this news is a big plus for fans. Black Manta is Aquaman’s greatest nemesis and has done horrible things to the Atlantean king over the course of nearly 50 years.

Black Manta has appeared in many iterations other than the comic. He was featured in the popular Super Friends cartoon which helped bring the character to an entire generation. Possibly the most interesting aspect of the character is his lack of superpowers. His imposing suit is the only thing providing him with the ability to duel with Aquaman.

The DCEU is obviously still trying to figure itself out, and having a memorable and effective villain would help get audiences on board in a big way. Casting will go a long way in getting people behind this film. Hopefully, the person chosen to play Black Manta will make this news even more exciting.

We will be getting our first real look at Jason Momoa in the first part of Zack Snyder’s Justice League next year. Considering that Aquaman has been viewed somewhat as a joke by casual audiences, the DC Extended Universe version has a lot of work to do when it comes to establishing Arthur Curry as one of the most fearsome heroes in the DC universe. Thankfully, having Black Manta as his eventual opponent goes a long way in making Aquaman‘s intent clear: this movie is no joke.
