The Fitzsimmons wedding was an emotional moment five years in the making. During WonderCon, FANDOM got to ask the cast and executive producers of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. exactly what it was like to be on set for that special day. Not only were the vows partly inspired by showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen‘s own vows, but actors Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain de Caestecker were both nervous to say them.

Fitzsimmons History

Since Season 1, Jemma Simmons and Leopold Fitz have been meant for each other. When they were introduced in the pilot as Coulson’s new recruits from the S.H.I.E.L.D. academy, they were even introduced as “Fitzsimmons”. From Fitz’s confession of love in Season 1, to his recurring visions of Jemma in Season 2, to her harrowing survival on Maveth in Season 3, to everything in between, Jemma and Fitz have literally crossed time and space to be together. So it was perfectly fitting to see them take their vows and finally wed during the 100th episode of the series.

When the day finally came to film the episode, emotions were running very high on set. Ming-Na Wen, who plays Agent Melinda May, said that “Elizabeth looked amazing” in her dress and that it was a “culmination of five seasons of waiting for this moment to happen.”

Chloe Bennet, who plays Daisy Johnson, said, “It was not scripted that I was crying, I was just bawling, and then I really wanted to hold her flowers.” Co-creator Jed Whedon said that “It was very emotional for the first hour of takes,” his wife and co-creator Maurissa Tancharoen echoed that sentiment and confirmed that “There were many teary-eyed people on set that day.”

Fitzsimmons themselves said that it was “deeply terrifying,” and “nerve-wracking because everyone’s there and looking at you.” Henstridge specifically said the wedding was a “gift to the fans,” especially since it took place during the 100th episode. Henry Simmons, who plays Mack, also shared how much he enjoyed having certain characters come back meant to him, like Deathlok.

You can hear the rest of Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain de Caestecker’s comments, as well as the rest of the cast in the video above.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays at 9pm on ABC.
