Triple 9 opens this weekend and is the latest feature film from Australian director John Hillcoat. His previous films include The Proposition, The Road, and Lawless. He’s also responsible for dozens of music videos for artists ranging from Crowded House to Depeche Mode to Nick Cave (who also wrote The Proposition).
The film will open on 2,000 theaters and features a veritable “who’s who” of the best and brightest talents working today. Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Gal Gadot, Anthony Mackie, Clifton Collins, Jr., Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus, Kate Winslet, and Aaron Paul are just the tip of the iceberg.
The video above summarizes my take on the film but if you are a fan of gritty crime flicks, this one should be right up your alley. It’s an uncompromising and grimy movie filled with a sense of dread and an up-close look at corruption but as far as February releases go, it’s a winner.
It also was filmed in and focuses on my adopted home of Atlanta, Georgia. Luckily, in my thirty-six years here I haven’t seen this kind of viciousness firsthand.
