Today, Nintendo exceeded everyone’s expectations when they revealed the roster for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The jam-packed roster will feature every character in Smash Bros. history, including strange ones like Mr. Game & Watch and the Wii Fit Trainer. They also introduced two exciting new characters: Inkling Girl from the Splatoon series and Ridley, Samus‘ archenemy from the Metroid franchise. So far, there are 60-plus characters confirmed to appear in the Switch game. But why stop there?

The Smash Bros. franchise has a history of throwing in unexpected characters. And while we love that we’ll see the return of our favorite weirdo characters, we would love to see more.  These characters often add unexpected twists to the gameplay that make them fan favorites. So, with E3 right around the corner, here are eight oddball characters that we want to see in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch.

Mama — Cooking Mama Franchise

With her cooking knowledge, Mama can definitely spice things up!
With her cooking knowledge, Mama can definitely spice things up!

Since Cooking Mama became a phenomenon back in 2006, the franchise has gathered a cult following, with players from all over the world preparing the most exquisite virtual dishes. The titular character, Mama, is a housewife with an enviable knowledge of all things cooking. She can make anything with ease, from crepes to lasagna and even sushi.

Mama is long overdue for an SSB appearance. With an encyclopedic knowledge of not only cooking but gardening and crafting, as well, Mama possesses a plethora of skills to deal damage on the SSB stage. Using an assortment of items, such as pans, rolling pins, gardening shears, and knives, Mama could destroy the competition with a smile only a mother could give.

Her Final Smash could even include elements from her popular game series, allowing her to transform her victims into delicious meals. Players could follow along, performing cooking actions when prompted, using the Joy-Con controllers. Victory, it’s what’s for dinner.

Henry Fleming — Code Name: S.T.E.A.M

This steampunk soldier has a lot of things to bring to SSB.
This steampunk soldier has a lot of things to bring to SSB.

Henry Fleming is the main character of Code Name: S.T.E.A.M, a 2015 strategy game on the Nintendo 3DS. It’s one of Nintendo’s newest IPs, so the series has yet to appear in Super Smash Bros. The game is set in a comic book version of the 1800s, with steam-powered tech and weapons. Abraham Lincoln even pilots a giant, steam-powered, Lincoln-shaped mech. Yeah, it’s that kind of game. Henry’s main weapon, the Eagle Rifle, is a versatile, all-around weapon. As a heavy weapon user, Henry could fill the heavy-weapon-user void that Snake left behind when he departed after Brawl.

Henry’s versatile Eagle Rifle could potentially execute ranged, quick, and charged attacks. In Code Name: S.T.E.A.M, the rifle enables the player to use a counter ability called “Overwatch,” which would fit perfectly into Smash Bros. The game also forces players to conserve their steam during their turns, a feature that could also be implemented into Henry’s moveset. The steam system could limit his special attacks or Final Smash, forcing players to think more creatively about their moves.

Mallo — Pushmo Franchise

Don't be fooled by his size, Mallo is an extremely strong character that could be a great tank.
Don't be fooled by his size. Mallo is an extremely strong character that would make a great tank.

Stretchmo is an e-shop puzzle game where players have to push, pull, and otherwise move 3D blocks in order to solve inventive puzzles. The title’s main character is Mallo, a tiny, red, sumo-like character who can summon enough strength to manipulate blocks ten or more times his size.

Since Mallo is a sumo wrestler, his moveset could allow him to push and pull other players around, potentially making him a slow but powerful tank. Adding summoning capabilities could allow him to create blocks or puzzle to help himself out of sticky situations. Mallo’s unexpected and unpredictable moveset would add some much-needed fun to the roster.

Coming up with a Final Smash for Mallo could be a bit difficult. However, he could possibly throw some of his biggest puzzles at players or even force them to solve them.

Elite Beat Agents — Elite Beat Agents

With their dancing skills -and great style- this team of government agents will keep everyone on their toes.
With their dancing skills, and great style, this team of government agents will keep everyone on their toes.

The Elite Beat Agents are a team of three dancing secret agents who go around helping people stuck in strange situations — with their impeccable rhythm. They first appeared in Elite Beat Agents for the DS in 2006, but they haven’t been in a game since then. Unless you count the trophies and stickers of the trio found in Super Smash Bros Brawl as an appearance. If Nintendo wants to add an obscure character to the roster, then the Elite Beat Agents are the way to go.

The game features nine agents in total (who dance in teams of three), and the player’s sense of rhythm determines the final score. The numbered markers, sliders, and spinners that appear on screen in-game could appear with the Agent as they fight. Other characters, like Wii Fit Trainer, have elements from their games’ UI appear in Smash; the Elite Beat Agents could take that to another level. A Final Smash that forces the other players to try and keep up with the Agent’s sweet moves or face the consequences, could be just the thing to keep confident players on their toes.

Waluigi — Various Mario Titles

The Purple Menace is definitely due to create to some chaos on SSB.
The Purple Menace definitely needs to wreak some chaos.

Considering that Luigi, Peach, Mario, and even Wario have appeared in the SSB franchise, it seems unfair that our favorite master of mischief has yet to make his chaotic debut.

Waluigi is, overall, a versatile and agile character in most games. These skills would easily play to his favor in SSB. Nintendo could easily implement his characteristic assist trophy move, where he stomps his opponents into the ground and finishes them off with a tennis rack swing or kick. His moveset could be expanded by adding moves that show off his powerful legs, along with a nasty trick or two.

Considering that Wario already has Wario-Man, it only makes logical sense that Waluigi would turn into Waluigi-Man for his Final Smash.

Viridi — Kid Icarus: Uprising

The Goddess of Nature and all of her allies can be a good replacement of Dark Pit or even Palutena.
The Goddess of Nature -- and her allies -- would be a good replacement for Dark Pit or even Palutena.

If you’ve played Kid Icarus: Uprising, you know all about the Goddess of Nature, Viridi. She’s the pint-sized leader of the Forces of Nature — with a grudge against all of humanity. The Kid Icarus series laid dormant until Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, revived it by bringing main character Pit into Brawl and directing Uprising. Viridi would be the perfect character to round out the Kid Icarus series’ presence in Smash.

Where Palutena is calm and graceful, Viridi is hot-headed and childish. That could be reflected in her moveset by making her faster and more aggressive than Palutena. She could summon Forces of Nature troops in her special attacks, along with other specials inspired by her commanders, such as lightning from Phosphora, spikes from Arlon, and rocks from Cragalanche.

Phoenix Wright — Ace Attorney Franchise

With his appearance in Marvel Vs. Capcon, Phoenix is one of the most requested characters to be on SSB.
Having already appeared in a fighting game, Phoenix is one of the most requested SSB characters.

Although he isn’t the best lawyer in the world, Phoenix Wright is certainly the best to appear in a video game. Phoenix’s killer personality, catchphrases, and iconic movements have earned him a permanent place in the hearts of players.

That alone is enough reason for him to appear in SSB! Out of all the characters on this list, Phoenix is the only one that has actually appeared in a fighting game. So his moveset shouldn’t be too difficult to recreate or adapt to the Switch and SSB.

The only thing that could use an upgrade is his Final Smash. While his Hyper Combos in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are impressive, our favorite lawyer deserves an interactive move on par with Mama from Cooking Mama. Taking advantage of the Joy-Con controller, Phoenix’s Final Smash could have players point at the screen and yell “Objection!” or “Take That!” Any players caught in the path of his finger point could receive massive damage.

Marshal — Rhythm Heaven Fever

This extremely versatile character and his rhythm based abilities are going to be the delight of technical players looking for a challenge.
This versatile character and his rhythm-based abilities would delight technical players seeking a challenge.

Marshal would be the perfect representative for Rhythm Heaven series, one of Nintendo’s newer franchises. The series started in 2003 on the Game Boy Advance and has released 3 more games since then on the DS, Wii, and 3DS. But despite being an active franchise, and selling millions, the Rhythm Heaven series barely has a presence in Super Smash Bros. Outside of one enemy, two songs, and five trophies, there’s nothing. So, what better way to properly bring the series into the fold than with a new character?

Marshal appears in the third game, Rhythm Heaven Fever, as one of the first characters you meet. He’s nearly a blank slate, with tons of potential for moves that draw inspiration from the whole series. His attacks could be rhythm based, like Marth’s Dancing Blade, requiring good timing to pull off. That would add a nice layer of technicality to him. A similar mechanic could be used for his Final Smash, where players must compete against each other by keeping the beat, and the losers are punished.
