Deadpool 2 will see FOX’s most foul-mouthed hero assembling his own super squad to protect Russell, a super-powered young mutant who is being hunted by the mutant Cable. In the comics, Cable brought together the X-Force, but it seems Wade Wilson will be responsible for their assembly this time. That means that Deadpool 2 is essentially an X-Force prequel film, and we’re OK with that.

We know that Deadpool 2 will feature Domino, Shatterstar, Bedlam, Zeitgeist, and Surge, but which original X-Force characters is the film leaving out? Since the team’s inception in August of 1991, the X-Force has featured dozens of members. However, the team did start with the main core of the New Mutants. Let’s take a look at the original characters who have appeared in the comics but won’t be appearing in Deadpool 2.

New Mutants & The X-Force

Sunspot and Cannonball in 'New Mutants'.

Boom Boom: Tabitha Smith joined the X-Force after her time in the New Mutants. During her time with the team she went by the names Boomer and Melt Down. Tabitha can create explosive balls of light with her hands. Tabitha and Cannonball had a romantic relationship in the comics. It remains to be seen if she’ll join the X-Force in a later film, or in the forthcoming New Mutants film.

Cannonball: Samuel Guthrie also joined the X-Force after his time with the New Mutants. Samuel is nearly indestructible and can create blast fields with his powers. He’s not in Deadpool 2, however, he does have a main role in FOX’s upcoming New Mutants film. He’ll be played by Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton. Negasonic Teenage Warhead is the replacement for Cannonball in the Deadpool franchise, per director Tim Miller.

Feral: Maria Callasantos joined the X-Force after discovering her mutant powers. She can transform into a feline and has sharp teeth, sharp claws, agility, and regenerative healing powers. Feral left the X-Force after a falling out with the team. So far she is not lined up to appear in Deadpool 2, New Mutants, or any other FOX property.

The Gifted Thunderbird
Blair Redford is Thunderbird in 'The Gifted.'

Warpath: James Proudstar was recruited into the New Mutants and then joined the X-Force. His powers include supernatural hearing, superhuman strength, and super jumping. Warpath is the brother of Thunderbird, who is currently starring on the FOX TV show The Gifted. If Warpath is introduced on The Gifted next season then it’s not likely that he’ll be appearing in any future Deadpool/X-Force films.

Siryn: Theresa Cassidy is the daughter of Banshee. Banshee was a main character in X-Men: First Class. Siryn has powerful vocal chords and emits sonic waves, like her father. In the comics, she spent some time with the X-Force, including a brief romantic relationship with Deadpool. No word yet if she’ll appear in any future X-Force films, however, you can hear her scream as a youth in X-2: X-Men United.

Rictor: Julio Richter possesses earth-shaking powers, hence the name Rictor. He spent time working alongside both the X-Force and the New Mutants. He’s currently not slated to be part of either film franchise.

Sunspot: Roberto da Costa can absorb solar radiation, among other numerous powers. He grew up in the Hellfire Club but eventually joined the New Mutants and then the X-Force. While Roberto is not set to appear in Deadpool 2, he will be in the New Mutants film.

Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18, 2018.
