Black Mirror writer and creator Charlie Brooker seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to giving fans what they want. Easter eggs tie the seemingly stand-alone episodes into each other, giving die-hard fans a good reason to pay attention. Season 4 is stacked with these, whether they’re big, small, or just downright meta. But if you don’t have the time to rewatch every hair-pulling, heart-wrenching episode, leave it to us. These are the seven Black Mirror Easter eggs you may have missed.

Anyone Who Knows What Love Is Will Understand

One song has haunted every season of Black Mirror thus far and it’s a bad omen every time. “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is” by Irma Thomas made its Black Mirror debut in “Fifteen Million Merits” from Season 1 when Abi sang it for the judges of the singing contest show, Hot Shot. Season 4 renews the lease on the song by playing it in the most painful episode yet, “Crocodile”. It also signaled bad times in Season 2’s “White Christmas” when sung in a karaoke flashback, and again when Raiman sang it in Season 3’s “Men Against Fire”.

Name Drops

If you weren’t too distracted by the Kirsten Dunst and Aaron Paul cameos, you may have caught all the name drops in “USS Callister”. The space crew visits the planets Skillane and Rannoch, which happen to be the last names of the couple guilty of murdering a child in Season 2’s “White Bear”. In “USS Callister”, the main character, Robert Daly (played by Kirsten Dunst’s fiancé, Jesse Plemons) also has a taste for Raiman’s brand flavored milk. In “Men Against Fire”, Raiman also mentions that her family owns a farm.

Hang the DJ

In the Season 3 episode, “Playtest”, we saw a peek at the Tinder of the Black Mirror universe when American tourist, Cooper, uses it to pick up a chick. In Season 4’s “Hang the DJ”, we get an in-depth demonstration of how the app actually functions. After simulating the risks these lovebirds would take to be with each other, the episode flourishes in one big set up designed to make the general public cry to The Smiths.

Museum Overload

The final episode of the season, “Black Museum”, blew the mystery of Easter eggs out of the water. Visual references to almost every episode were on display and those that weren’t were referenced in dialogue. One Easter egg from this episode includes a reference to the Emmy-winning episode from Season 3, “San Junipero”, as the name of the hospital that Rolo Haynes worked at — St. Juniper. “Fifteen Million Merits” also returned as a graphic novel in the tragic story about the monkey doll.

Mirror, Mirror

Did you catch the episode of Black Mirror in the episode of Black Mirror? As a young Sara is inundated with her new brain implant in “Arkangel”, the violent video she is shown is none other than a scene from the Black Mirror episode “Men Against Fire”. Not to mention, they verbatim took the Grain interface from Season 1’s “The Entire History of You” for the memory rewind function.

Pizza’s Here

In case you were wondering what the preferred Black Mirror pizza brand is, you can now sleep easy. Daly in “USS Callister” orders pizza from Fences Pizza, the same brand that operates the driverless pizza trucks (please become real) in “Crocodile”.

Busted

By far the best Easter eggs of Season 4 were Charlie Brooker’s jabs at over-zealous egg-hunting fans. Found only by arduous pausing and reading of fine print, each instance calls out the ludicrous obsession needed to find them. In “Crocodile”, a newspaper article contains an out-of-place paragraph that reads: “‘Of course the real question is why anyone would pause what they’re watching just to read a sentence in a printed out newspaper article’, says a voice in your head – before advising you to go and share this finding on Reddit.” In the end, the first person to notice this posted it on Reddit.

The next meta-egg is not so eloquent. In “Metalhead”, while a van is being hacked into, it’s computer reads out: “WHY. did. you. bother PAUSING. this. you. freak”. Clearly, the writers are having a little bit of fun toying with the fans this season.
