After a three-month wait, Voltron: Legendary Defender is set to return for its sixth season in just over a week. The new trailer, released yesterday, has us hyped to see what’s in store next for our favorite paladins.

Season 5 left us with quite a different status quo from before. Lotor killed his father, Zarkon and assumed the Galra throne, all as part of a new alliance with Team Voltron. Now it’s time to see how the team and the rest of the Galra Empire react to the changing landscape.

Will Lotor’s Plan Finally Work?

Lotor and Allura in his ship

One of the more mysterious plot points of Voltron so far has been the interdimensional rift. The rift formed when the trans-reality comet hit Planet Daibazaal millennia ago. Lotor wants to enter the rift for its unlimited supply of quintessence so he can bring peace to the empire. Will he finally deliver this season?

The trailer shows Lotor’s ship entering the rift, hopefully with more success than his previous attempt. Most likely, Lotor and Allura will make the trek given that Allura learned the secrets of Altean alchemy in Season 5 to help with Lotor’s plan. The two seem to be preparing for the journey in the trailer and are noticeably absent from some group shots of the team.

The Return of the Mullet

Keith has returned

Speaking of Allura being absent from the group, that leads to one of the happier moments from the trailer: Keith’s return. Keith left the team early in Season 4 to join the Blade of Marmora full-time and has had sparse appearances since. In the trailer, it looks like he’s coming back to rejoin Team Voltron which is reason enough to celebrate. But at what cost? Allura’s not there to greet him with the others, so does that mean she’s in danger? Is Keith going to pilot a lion again so the team can still form Voltron? And if so, will he get the Red Lion again, bringing Lance back to Blue?

Meet the Mother

Krolia and Keith stare at some celestial phenomenon

By far the most exciting parts of the trailer are the shots featuring Keith and his mom, Krolia. We met Krolia in Season 5’s “Bloodlines,” at the end of which Keith found out that she is his mother. The trailer shows them traversing some asteroids in space, with Krolia hanging onto Keith during an explosion. But hopefully we’ll get to see the two talk things out and we’ll learn more about Krolia. Why did she come to Earth all those years ago, and why did she leave Keith there when she left?

Uncovering the Truth

Shiro looking serious

There’s one point that’s not explicitly mentioned in the trailer, but nevertheless, it’s there and it needs to be addressed: Operation Kuron. Season 5 brought a disturbing update to this storyline when Haggar initiated Stage 4, which allows her to spy on Team Voltron through Shiro’s eyes. Shiro himself has become moodier and told Lance that he doesn’t feel like himself. All signs point to him being a clone.

That brings us to the trailer. When Keith lands in the castle’s hangar, Lance asks, “How do we know you’re the real Keith?” It’s a reach, but this line might imply that the team already questioned the credibility of one of its members, and they’re now wary of others returning after prolonged absences. Is this the season the team finds out about Shiro and Operation Kuron?

What Will Sendak Do?

Sendak leading the way

After making his case for the throne last season, Sendak will be a major threat to Lotor’s reign of the Galra Empire. Yet the trailer seems to make things a little personal between him and Team Voltron. At one point, Sendak tells Shiro, “I know your weakness.” While this weakness could be a variety of things, the possibility that stands out the most is Earth. In Season 1, Sendak hinted in a threatening manner that he might “visit” Earth based on what he’d seen of Shiro. If he follows through on that and brings the war to Earth, then Team Voltron will have more at stake than ever before.

The new trailer ties many plot lines together as the series grows, which should make for a wild, complex ride. You can catch Season 6 of Voltron on Netflix when it drops on June 15.
