After a very climactic second season, Attack on Titan says goodbye once more, the megahit anime’s season finale set fans up for an even more epic third season. And while fans don’t have to wait four years for the new season this time – season three is set to be released in 2018 – we can’t wait that long to find out more about those humanoid giants. So, while we sit and wait for season three, here are five anime shows you need to watch if you love Attack on Titan.

Claymore

  • Number of episodes: 26 episodes
  • Year of Release: 2007

In a world much different from ours, humans and Yoma live side by side. However, the latter prey on and eat people. The most frightening of all is that these Yoma can shapeshift into humans. To counter this threat, the Silver Eyed Witches a.k.a. Claymores were created. Claymores are a special breed of half-human, half-Yoma that hunt down the Yoma. Clare is a Claymore on a mission to find and destroy the Yoma that changed her life.

Both Attack on Titan and Claymore take place in a similar world where the future is bleak due to the emergence of a powerful enemy. On top of the harsh situations that the characters go through, Claymore, like AoT, has strong female characters prominently featured.

Tokyo Ghoul

  • Number of episodes: 24 episodes (2 seasons)
  • Year of Release: 2014

What lurks in the shadows of Tokyo might be something more sinister than the monsters that we’ve come to know. People live in fears of ghouls, mysterious human-looking creatures that eat human flesh. While all the Ghoul news causes concern, young Kaneki is unbothered. His view quickly changes when a date goes horribly wrong and he is transformed into a Ghoul-human half breed. Now, he is smack in the middle of Ghoul feuds while trying to adapt to his new life.

If you liked Attack on Titan, you might also like Tokyo Ghoul. One parallel between the two anime shows is that humans are seen as a source of nutrients, even if the Titans in AoT do vomit their victims. Also, the main character of both series – Eren and Kaneki – have their lives drastically changed due to a human-eating creature.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

  • Number of episodes: 12 episodes
  • Year of Release: 2016

On the fictional island of Hinomoto, humans hide from zombie-like creatures – Kabane – in iron fortresses called “stations.” Armored with only locomotives known as “Hayajiro,” people travel between stations bringing some sense of normality to their lives. But, their somewhat peaceful lives take a dark turn when the Kabane infiltrate Hayajiro.

Wit Studio produced Kabaneri – the same studio that produced Attack on Titan – so the two anime series share many similarities. One might even call Kabaneri a copycat version of AoT. Be that as it may, the series delivers some heavy punches and unexpected twists that makes it worthwhile for AoT fans.

Knights of Sidonia

  • Number of episodes: 24 episodes (2 seasons)
  • Year of Release: 2014

Netflix’s first original anime series, Knights of Sidonia, follows the last remaining humans as they try to survive and fight the alien race Gauna that destroyed Earth many years ago. After the Guana had taken over Earth, humanity fled across the galaxy in giant seed ships. Now it’s the year 3394, and Nagate Tanikaze surfaces from his lifelong seclusion deep beneath the seed ship Sidonia in search of food on the upper levels. But, instead of food, he is dragged into wielding a giant mecha against the Gauna.

Like the Walls in Attack on Titan, the seed ships of Sidonia offer a haven to humans and both were built out of fear leading to people secluding themselves from everything else. And like AoT, the creature suddenly reappears and it is up to the main character to destroy them all.

Blue Gender

Blue Gender
  • Number of episodes: 26 episodes
  • Year of Release: 1999

In the not so distant future, humans have retreated to outer space as a race of bug-like aliens has taken their position on top of the food chain. To get their home back, Yuji and Marlene need to fight in a bloody war with virtually no chance of survival.

Like the other anime series’ featured on this list, Blue Gender has a similar setting and somber tone. Both AoT and Blue Gender feature the bloody lengths that humans will go to for survival. And both shows explores the themes of loss, depression, and death.
