When anime shows end on a cliffhanger or leave the ending open, it can be frustrating. Sure, popular shows like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia seem to get renewed immediately following each season’s finale, but for many other titles, this often isn’t the case. There are many well-received shows that have yet to receive a new season. So, here are five anime shows that absolutely deserve a sequel.

Hyouka

anime that deserve a sequel Hyouka

Hyouka follows the four members of the Classic Literature Club: the energy-conservative Oreki, the knowledgeable Fukube, the stern but friendly Ibara, and curious Chitanda. But instead of doing normal club activities, they are on the case to solve a 45-year-old mystery.

Hyouka may be a mystery anime, but it heavily focuses on practical cases and character development. The interactions between the show’s characters start off a bit bland, but, eventually, Chitanda’s ever-growing curiosity for mysteries and Oreki’s laziness draws viewers in. From taking part in the school’s cultural festival to solving the mystery in a student movie, fans want to be part of Chitanda and Oreki’s adventures.

In addition to the mystery and slice-of-life elements, Hyouka hints at a romantic story that slowly unfolds throughout the series. In the season finale, Oreki and Chitanda stand near a cherry tree, discussing their plans for the future, and for a brief moment, it seems that they are about to confess their love for each other. Instead, they only discuss what career paths they would like to take after high school.

This was a somewhat lackluster ending given the whole series and final scenes were building towards this romantic moment. Fans want to see what happens next to these characters. Will they continue cracking cases, will they take the romantic route, or will they do both?

GANGSTA

anime that deserve a sequel GANGSTA.

GANGSTA ended abruptly in 2015 when Manglobe, the anime studio behind Samurai Champloo, went bankrupt. Even so, the studio ended on a high note with this mafia drama. From its stylish opening sequences and awesome fight scenes to its amazing main leads, fans were immediately in love with GANGSTA.

In the fictional city of Ergastulum, four local mafia families run the town, so crime and corruption rule the streets. The series follows Worick, the former scion of a wealthy family, Nicolas, a super-powered soldier with impaired hearing, and Alex, a prostitute. Without them knowing, these three will soon be in the middle of a deadly war between the four powers in Ergastulum.

One of the series’ biggest draws was its fighting sequences, which flow masterfully with each blow thanks to the dark colors that make the blood-spatter and carnage stand out. Also, the use of Japanese hip-hop music for the soundtrack worked well with GANGSTA‘s action mafia story.

Still, it’s the relationship between Worick and Nicolas that really made the show. At first, the two didn’t get along well with each other. It wasn’t until Worick’s family was slaughtered that two really grew closer. After the murders, the two boys turned to criminal activities to survive and their bond lasted into their adult years. Unfortunately, GANGSTA ends right there.

The biggest flaw of the series is its unexpected ending. The anime stops in the middle of the show’s biggest fight, leaving the series on a huge cliffhanger. GANGSTA was a promising anime show that may never get a chance to continue to shine. That is unless another studio takes advantage of this wonderful opportunity and makes a sequel.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Featured at number four on our best anime of 2016 list, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash made an impact on the anime community. The series stands out from other popular isekai anime by creating a realistic portrayal of being “trapped in another world.”

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash follows a group of children with no recollection of their past lives. The kids suddenly arrive in a fantasy world crawling with adventurers, monsters, and demons. To survive, the children must go on missions, but if they die, there’s no respawning, as this is not a game, but real life.

Instead of watching the kids complete the primary mission right away with unbelievable strength, we see how the characters adjust to their new environment and earn money to live. Because of this, the anime’s focus is on teamwork, and how each member works with each other, despite their varying personalities.

While the series was very popular during the winter 2016 lineup, as of this writing, there’s been no news of a second season for the anime. Another season could address important questions like who transported the group to the world of Grimgar, and why? In the meantime, fans of the show will just have to be happy with reading the manga series to see what’s coming up next for the adventurers.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer!

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! is another series that anime fans would like to see continue. On the verge of conquering Ente Isla, Satan and his general, Alciel find themselves trapped in the human world. With no powers to transport themselves back, what is the Prince of Darkness to do? Well, get a job at MgRonald’s, as “conquering the world” isn’t really much of a career skill.

The series won fans over with its situational comedy, which mostly stemmed from Satan scraping together as much money as possible to survive and the crazy fights he got into. But the anime had its dark moments too, and it perfectly combined these elements of comedy and drama, thanks to the strong personalities of the characters.

The way The Devil Is a Part-Timer! used its otherworldly characters to satirize the struggles of everyday life is why the series amassed worldwide popularity and why it deserves a sequel. It would be great to see more of Satan’s hidden dark side, as he transformed from a villain into a hero when he used all of his magic to repair the city.

Baccano!

While Baccano! has gained a lot of die-hard fans over the years, the series hasn’t received a sequel yet. While most anime shows concentrate on one focal story, Baccano! breaks the mold by incorporating many. And with a large and dynamic set of characters, such a feat is easy to accomplish. The plot comes to life through the fragmented points of view of several colorful characters like hitman Ladd Russo and the hilarious duo Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent.

When put side by side, each storyline is a combination of utter confusion and unseen connections. However, by the end of the series, everything comes together, forming a riveting dark comedy anime that to this day fans consider as one of the best anime of all time. On top of that, funny and serious sequences come to life thanks to the catchy soundtrack that gives off a Prohibition-era vibe.

Despite, the anime tying almost all loose ends by the end of its first season, Ryohgo Narita’s Baccano! light novel series is still going. Brain’s Base could adapt the events that happened after the anime series, the 1935 collection, The Grateful Betand Luckstreet Boys into a sequel season for the show. So, clearly, a lack of source material isn’t a reason to not have a second season. Any studio who takes on the mission of adapting the novels would make fans very happy.
