Summer is upon us and besides heading to the beach and enjoying a few cold drinks, a new batch of anime series and movies are coming this sunny season. This summer 2017 anime season welcomes back several favorites and of course, some new ones. From sword-wielding heroes to detective priests, here are 15 anime series and movies you need to watch this summer.

Fate/Apocrypha

  • Premiere Date: July 2, 2017
  • Studio: A-1 Pictures
  • Genre: Action, Historical, Supernatural, Drama, Magic, Fantasy

The newest rendition of the Fate series, Fate/Apocrypha takes place in a parallel world to Fate/stay night, where the Grail mysteriously disappears from Fuyuki City after the Third Holy Grail War.

Many years have passed since the Grail’s disappearance, and the world hasn’t experienced a Holy War. However, this seemingly peaceful time comes to a halt when the Yggdmillennia – a family of magi – openly declare their secession from the Mage’s Association. On top of that, they’re in possession of the Grail. To recover the Grail, the Association sends 50 magi to retrieve it. However, all but one meet an untimely end at the hands of a mysterious servant.

The only surviving magus manages to activate the reserve system of the Greater Grail, allowing for the summoning of 14 servants. With each side holding seven servants, the world once again will bear witness of the Holy Grail War. Zero has raised the bar for fantasy action anime including in its latest adaptation, Fate/Apocrypha. However, the Apocrypha trailer looks like it will come pretty close thanks to its fighting sequences and dark plot.

Chronos Ruler

  • Premiere Date: July 8, 2017
  • Studio: Project No.9
  • Genre: Supernatural, Shounen, Fantasy

Based on the manga by Taiwanese artist Pon Jea, Chronos Ruler follows those who fight time-eating demons that appear when people wish they could turn back time. The anime series follows two young men who fight these demons and protect the fabric of time.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information out about Chronos Ruler just yet. However, the trailer’s mix of jazz and blues tunes does make me curious as to whether it will mesh well with its visuals and fighting sequences.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower

  • Premiere Date: July 8, 2017
  • Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi
  • Studio: Studio Ponoc
  • Genre: Adventure, Magic, Fantasy

The first feature film from Studio Ponoc, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, will make its debut this summer. At the helm of the movie is director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty and When Marnie Was There) and producer Yoshiaki Nishimura (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya). And if you haven’t noticed, both of them used to work at Studio Ghibli.

Even though Ponoc is the beginning of a new era of animation, the film does mirror many Studio Ghibli themes that have become synonymous with the legendary studio. Still, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is a movie for the whole family to enjoy and it delivers a strong heart-warming message.
