Halloween is near, which means horror and gore anime fans are in their element. With so many amazing gore anime as well as all the scary movies and shows to catch up on for Halloween, it stands to reason that there are also some seriously creepy characters in there too. So, here are the top 10 horror and gore anime characters you need to avoid on a dark, cold, scary night.

Ai Enma (Hell Girl)

No matter what you do, you are doomed if you cross Ai Enma, or as she’s better known, Hell Girl. Physically, Ai doesn’t provoke fear, she’s a beautiful young girl, albeit with a cold personality. But it’s her otherworldly powers that will have you trembling in fear.

When a client seeks vengeance, they must pull the red string tied around a straw doll and Ai will take the person the client has chosen immediately to hell. But, by pulling the red string, the client also agrees that they will be sent to hell as well. We all get angry and act on our emotion, but given some time to cool down, we often feel remorse for that action. In the case of Hell Girl, however, there’s no going back. Talk about making a deal with the devil.

Shiro (Deadman Wonderland)

What’s frightening and makes Shiro from Deadman Wonderland so scary is her split personality. She became the test subject of Hagire Rinichirō and Sorae Igarashi who performed horrible experiments. These experiments created the first Deadman as well as Shiro’s second personality, known as the Wretched Egg, to cope with her pain. As a result, when you cross Shiro’s path, you never know who you’re going to meet — will it be the bubbly, energetic girl who loves sweets or the sadistic and vicious Red Man.

Kyubey (Madoka Magica)

Beware of this little “plush toy” — it is not to be messed with. Kyubey appears as the “Messenger of Magic” who grants wishes to girls, but in reality, it’s an advanced alien species sent to collect emotional energy. Kyubey’s goal is to make as many Magical Girls die. But what sets the cutesy toy apart from other villains is that it lacks empathy or any emotion, and only sees humans as energy producers. On top of that, it feels that plotting someone’s death is not that bad, only a “necessary evil.”

“Whenever I tell you humans the simple facts, you always react the same way. It makes no sense at all. Why are humans so sensitive about the kind of container their souls are housed in.”

Diana and Elaine Reed (Genocyber)

What do you have when you combine a robotized body, a wild child, and an animal’s nervous system? You get the key to extinguishing the human race. Diana and Elaine might seem like innocent children, but the twin sister mutants in Genocyber will kill anyone on sight. Nothing can kill this monster, not even a full-blown nuclear war aimed at wiping them out.

Monokuma (Danganronpa)

Imagine your favorite teddy bear trying to kill you, and that’s what Monokuma is. Similar to Kyubey, Monokuma from Danganropa is a cute teddy bear with a sadistic personality. Worse still, he also suffers from split personality; left and black. On one side he acts sweet and innocent, but on the other hand, he will do anything for the sake of despair. He has eyes into and controls almost every room at Hope’s Peak Academy, making it almost impossible to escape.

GYO fish (GYO)

If you are afraid of the water, too bad, you are not safe on land either. In GYO, a horde of fish with metal legs invade the coast of Japan, carrying a disgusting odor known as the “death stench.” No problem, just stay inside. Wrong! While it all starts out as small fish with these metal legs, soon giant great white sharks are coming out of the water with the legs as well. Try hiding from that! Plus, when one of the metal legs breaks through human skin, the human body swells up and becomes covered in boils.

Gotou (Parasyte the Maxim)

If you’ve seen Parasyte the Maxim, you know how Shinichi was scared out of his pants when Gotou was chasing after him. Who wouldn’t be? He shows no remorse in combat and dismembers his opponents without a second thought, and he has perfect hunting skills as he patiently waits for the opportune moment to attack his victims. On top of that, his intelligence, speed, and defensive capabilities make him a potent adversary.

Gantz the black sphere (Gantz)

Imagine one day waking up in a room with a black sphere only to find out that you died and have been brought back to hunt and kill aliens. The sphere controls your life and actions with its unlimited power. Basically, you do not even control your end.

Sachiko Shinozaki (Corpse Party)

When Sachiko was alive, she was a shy and reclusive little girl. But after the death of her mother, she became a sadistic, vengeful spirit. She starts out as Casper the Friendly Ghost then kills you afterward. Sachiko doesn’t kill her victims right away, either. Instead, she likes to gouge their eyes out or rip out their tongue just for her amusement. What makes her an even more terrifying anime character is that she targets children.

Urado (Ghost Hunt)

Urado is one of the scariest characters of Ghost Hunt. In life, Urado was obsessed with prolonging his life, until the heinous crimes of historic figures Vlad the Impaler and Elizabeth Báthory inspires him to murder. With the help of his servants, he begins killing people and bathing in their blood. After his death, his spirit continues murdering young people to extend his life. Detectives were unable to close the case, leaving the story unresolved and making him one of the scariest characters in anime.
