It’s that time of year, when we take the time to crunch through our backlog and start looking ahead of the future. 2017 was a great year for games, and showed us that launching in spring away from the traditional fall release season — looking at you, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild… — is a win for everybody. As we celebrate this year’s amazing games slate, we can’t help but look into 2018 and get the hype train rolling for what’s to come. Here are the games we’re most excited to play in 2018.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 – Feb. 26, 2018

Set to launch in February, Ubisoft is taking the Far Cry series in a whole new direction with Far Cry 5. Whereas previous entries in the franchise took us to faraway places and exotic countries — including an apocalyptic future overrun with cyborg dinosaurs — this time it’s staying close to home. Set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, players will step into the shoes of the sheriff’s deputy in an attempt to take down a dangerous and militaristic doomsday cult. This premise feels somewhat close to home, given the current political climate. But we can’t wait to get out hands on this first-person shooter. (Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC.)

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 – TBA

Okay, we can dream, can’t we? Although we haven’t heard much from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red on its secretive in-development project in recent years, we’re hoping the illusive Cyberpunk 2077 will come back into the spotlight. And if we’re really hoping, maybe it’ll even get a release date for sometime in 2018. Cyberpunk 2077 will be set in a cyborg-riddled future, and will be an action role-playing game. We still don’t know much about it, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting excited. (Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC.)

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human – Spring 2018

The latest game from narrative-driven creator David Cage is also a robot-led affair. Detroit: Become Human will allow players to choose their own adventure and craft their own stories. They’ll be playing as AI robots serving humans, and players will find themselves in all kinds of difficult situations. A recent trailer for the game even dealt with family trauma and child abuse. Given Cage’s previous games — Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls — were emotional heavy-hitters, we’re betting Detroit will be a real gut-punch. (Coming to PlayStation 4.)

Dreams

Dreams – TBA

Media Molecule, the studio behind the original LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, revealed their mysterious masterpiece Dreams a few years ago, and have been quiet ever since. Now, they’re laying on the info and prepping for its release. Dreams will allow players to create the things they, well, dream, and then play with them. It’s difficult to describe Dreams, but it looks like Media Molecule has made something unlike anything we’ve seen before. And for that, we’re pumped. (Coming to PlayStation 4.)

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake – TBA

Once again, we can dream. We’ve heard so little from Square Enix about the Final Fantasy VII Remake that we can only assume they’re nearly completion. Wouldn’t want to spoil all the surprises with a bunch of trailers, right? This version of Final Fantasy VII will be focused on the game’s story, and is being made under the supervision of Final Fantasy character artist and Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura. (Coming to PlayStation 4.)

God of War

God of War – Q1/Q2 2018

The simply titled God of War is not a reboot of the franchise with the same name. Rather it’s an all-new adventure with our pal Kratos in an entirely new territory: fatherhood. Players will guide Kratos and his son on a journey through a snowy northern wilderness. They’ll fight monsters together and — hopefully — discover some cool secrets along the way. Also with an incredible score from legendary composer Bear McCreary, why would you want to pass on this? (Coming to PlayStation 4.)

Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts III – TBA 2018

More than 15 years after the release of the original Kingdom Hearts, we are finally getting the conclusion to Sora and Riku’s tale. Kingdom Hearts III will launch this year and include a number of new worlds to visit from popular Disney properties. This include the likes of Tangled, Big Hero 6, and even Toy Story. If we’re being honest, though? We’d love to see Marvel and Star Wars in the mix there, now that Disney has revolutionized the cinematic universes of these two properties. Just think about it: Mickey Mouse wielding a lightsaber Keyblade. You know you want it. (Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One.)

Sea of Thieves steering quiet moments

Sea of Thieves – Q1/Q2 2018

Beloved studio Rare is back in the spotlight with Sea of Thieves, a seafaring adventure game where you and your friends create pirate crews and shuttle off over a vast ocean. You can discover islands and buried treasure, engage in naval combat with other players, and even fight haunted skeletons and sing sea shanties. It’s cartoony art style and open-world multiplayer premise captured everyone’s attention when it was announced, and now it’s one of the main reasons to go out and grab an Xbox One. (Coming to Xbox One.)

spider-man

Spider-Man – Q1/Q2 2018

It’s been awhile since we last got a Spider-man game. This PlayStation 4 exclusive by Ratchet and Clank and Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games already looks promising. Spider-man will tell an all-new story in the Spider-man universe, and will have players participate in aspects of Peter Parker’s life both as a college student and as the web-slinging superhero. (Coming to Playstation 4.)

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 – Q2 2018

One of the crown jewels of developer Rockstar Games, we’ve been waiting for this sequel to western adventure Red Dead Redemption for seven years. Players will step into the shoes of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw and a member of the Van der Linde gang. While we still don’t know much about the actual plot and gameplay elements for Red Dead Redemption 2, this is a Rockstar affair. So of course, we’re jumping out of our seats. (Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One.)
